When a block is tipped onto one corner and let go, it experiences two forces: its weight (acting at the center of mass), and the normal force from the floor, which acts at the point of contact. If we consider that point of contact to be the pivot, then only the weight exerts a torque on the block, and the direction the block falls depends on the relative horizontal position of the center of mass and the point of contact.
